So, we can talk a little more about what you do at a roustabout job. Like I said in the last post, roustabout jobs are the bottom of the job pyramid on the offshore oil rigs. Your typical roustabout is an entry-level common labor worker. Trick is, you get paid executive money for common labor work.
You’ll be loading and unloading crap until you’re sick of it. You’ll be wet half the time and dirty almost all the time. Experience with making mechanical repairs with small tools, a little welding background, and a history of construction work will help you get on as a roustabout. Expect to spend a lot of time cleaning decks and equipment. But, it’s not just all brainless labor that you do as a roustabout. You’re going to be learning the oil drilling business.
If you’ve got the balls to hang in there and learn, you can get promoted to roughneck. As a roughneck you supervise the roustabouts and take directions from the driller. I was up for promotion to roughneck but a car wreck permanently cancelled that.
The thing about it is that this is an entry-level job that requires a willingness on your part to endure hard physical labor. If you’re a sissy there’s no need in wasting your time applying. The work can be dangerous if you don’t pay attention.
On the other hand, if you’ve enough of a man to handle the job, you’ll only work six months of the year and make more money than the average Joe who gets two weeks off for a year’s work, and your company’s benefits package will be better than just about anywhere else you can work. If you want to you can learn about the business and move on up the ladder. So, that is why I recommend roustabout jobs for the guy that doesn’t mind working hard.
