Roustabout Jobs

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Hey guys, Jack here again to talk about Roustabout Jobs. It took me a few months of looking and trying to find companies with roustabout vacancies before I finally got hired. There is no fun in looking for work; at least for me hunting for a roustabout job was worse than actually going to work.

A good place to start your search is taking a look at whom you know. Sometimes it isn’t too hard to find relatives or friends who know someone that can help you get a contact. You see, that’s what happened to me. I got hooked up through a friend of a friend of a friend. Also, you future roustabouts shouldn’t focus too much energy on your roustabout salary when looking at different offshore oil rig jobs because roustabout pay isn’t all that different from company to company.

A couple of years after my car accident my cousin was looking for roustabout employment and wanted me to help him. Unfortunately, all my contacts had moved on because of the layoffs in the oil industry a few years ago and I couldn’t help him. My cousin did something I probably wouldn’t ever do because I’m too damn cheap. He paid for a service to help him look for roustabout oil rig jobs. They sent out his resume all over the place and he got hired pretty quickly. Go figure! Anyways I have posted a link to the service he used if that is something you’re interested in. I wouldn’t have paid for it myself, but then I am somewhat of a dumb ass anyway. My cousin was smart enough to find help and would have been working for months while I was still looking for a job.

I plan on researching and eventually posting a list of companies that hire roustabouts. In the meantime boss, you’re on you own.

Roustabout Jobs – What Do You Do?

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

So, we can talk a little more about what you do at a roustabout job. Like I said in the last post, roustabout jobs are the bottom of the job pyramid on the offshore oil rigs. Your typical roustabout is an entry-level common labor worker. Trick is, you get paid executive money for common labor work.

You’ll be loading and unloading crap until you’re sick of it. You’ll be wet half the time and dirty almost all the time. Experience with making mechanical repairs with small tools, a little welding background, and a history of construction work will help you get on as a roustabout. Expect to spend a lot of time cleaning decks and equipment. But, it’s not  just all brainless labor that you do as a roustabout. You’re going to be learning the oil drilling business.

If you’ve got the balls to hang in there and learn, you can get promoted to roughneck. As a roughneck you supervise the roustabouts and take directions from the driller. I was up for promotion to roughneck but a car wreck permanently cancelled that.

The thing about it is that this is an entry-level job that requires a willingness on your part to endure hard physical labor. If you’re a sissy there’s no need in wasting your time applying. The work can be dangerous if you don’t pay attention.

On the other hand, if you’ve enough of a man to handle the job, you’ll only work six months of the year and make more money than the average Joe who gets two weeks off for a year’s work, and your company’s benefits package will be better than just about anywhere else you can work. If you want to you can learn about the business and move on up the ladder. So, that is why I recommend roustabout jobs for the guy that doesn’t mind working hard.

Roustabout Jobs – What Are They?

Partner, I can tell you that a roustabout  job is about as low as you can get at an offshore oil rig job. The work is dirty, the hours are long (try a couple of weeks of 12 hour days working seven days a week). It does not matter if the sun is shining or there’s straight-line gale force wind and rain, you still work outside.

You’re gonna get beat up physically with the work and if you don’t watch what you are doing you can lose a finger or two. So why in hell would anyone want to be a roustabout? Well, for starters, you only work half a year and depending on who you work for you’ll probably make $40 to $50 grand a year. The food and a place to sleep are taken care of for you and you are treated pretty damn well for what you do. I’ll write more about roustabout jobs soon.
